Why you can't pay for the cloud from Ghana

· Marina

Try to deploy a project on any of the big global platforms from Accra and you will hit the same wall everyone hits. Not a technical one. A payment one.

They want a card. Specifically, an international card, in dollars, that clears through a system built for somewhere else. Plenty of Ghanaian developers and business owners do not have one, and the ones who do spend the whole time watching an unpredictable dollar bill they cannot pay down in cedis.

So the best tools in the world sit behind a door most people here cannot open. It has nothing to do with skill. The talent is not the problem. The checkout page is.

Mobile Money already solved this

Ghana does not run on cards. It runs on Mobile Money. It is how people pay for airtime, for goods, for each other, every day, from a phone. It is the most natural payment rail in the country, and no serious cloud platform accepts it.

That gap is the reason Marina exists. Not “cheaper hosting.” A cloud you can actually pay for, in the currency you earn, through the method you already trust.

How paying for Marina works

You keep a wallet. You top it up with Mobile Money, the same way you would send anyone money. When you run a site, an app, a database, or an email address, the cost comes out of that balance. You can see every charge. Nothing renews behind your back onto a card you forgot about, because there is no card.

  • No international card, ever.
  • No dollar billing. Everything is priced in cedis.
  • Prepaid, so you can never be surprised by a bill larger than your balance.
  • Your first site is free, so you can see it work before you spend anything.

Why this matters more than price

The usual pitch for local hosting is that it is cheap. That is the wrong argument. Cheap cPanel hosting has existed here for twenty years, and it feels like it.

The thing that was missing was not a lower price. It was access: the modern deploy experience the rest of the world has, reachable with the money Ghana actually uses. That is what we built. The card was the barrier. Mobile Money is the answer.
